  1. Ohio HUC-12 Watersheds: Which Subwatersheds Have the Most State Bridges?

    ODOT-maintained bridges by HUC-12 subwatershed

I took "state bridges" to mean bridges whose major maintenance falls to the state (ODOT bridge inventory code maint_resp_cd = '01'). That's 14,317 structures. Each bridge point is placed in the one NRCS HUC-12 subwatershed it falls in, and 14,311 of them landed in one. The other 6 sit just outside the subwatershed outlines.

    What the map shows

    • The subwatersheds with the most state bridges are where interstates and freeway interchanges are densest. They include the Scioto and Olentangy through central Columbus and the Cuyahoga and Big Creek in Cleveland. Others are the Great Miami near Dayton, the Little Cuyahoga in Akron, Mill Creek in Cincinnati, the Mahoning in Youngstown and Nimishillen Creek in Canton. Kian Run–Scioto River has the most, with 122 bridges, about 160 per 100 km².
    • Statewide, a subwatershed has 7 state bridges at the median and 9.2 on average. Only 23 have 50 or more. 960 have 1–9, and 79 have none.
    • Headwaters West Fork Duck Creek (rank 19) is the one largely rural subwatershed in the top 20. It has a high count but a low density (26 per 100 km²).
    • Town of Newport–Ohio River crosses into Kentucky. Its count includes only bridges in ODOT's inventory.

    Notes and caveats

    • Counts come from ODOT's TIMS Bridge Inventory, which ODOT updates daily. It includes structures shorter than the 20-foot NBI minimum, so totals are higher than an NBI-only count would be.
    • A bridge is counted where its inventory point sits. That point is not necessarily the stream it crosses, so some bridges counted here are over roads or railroads, not water.
    • Other ways to define it: by route type, counting bridges carrying a state-system route (rte_on_brg_cd = '10', about 13,000), or limiting to bridges over waterways only (type_serv2_cd 5–9). Either can be rerun the same way.

Provenance: oh_bridge_inventory

This file describes how the rows in PostgreSQL table oh_bridge_inventory were obtained from an external source: where they were fetched and how fields were renamed and typed. Field meanings are in the mapping table below.

Identity
Pipeline (TIMS family)

Ohio DOT TIMS publishes this layer on the TIMS data page. The catalog behind that page is GET https://tims.dot.state.oh.us/tims/api/glossary. Each entry names a MapServer layer URL.

Data is fetched as GeoJSON from that layer's REST query endpoint (where=1=1, outFields=*, outSR=4326, f=geojson), paginated with resultOffset / resultRecordCount. GeoJSON was chosen over the portal's CSV/SHP/GDB/KMZ exports because it keeps full attribute names, keeps geometry, and loads into PostGIS via ST_GeomFromGeoJSON.

Esri field names become lowercase snake_case PostgreSQL columns (non [a-z0-9_] → _). Dates stored as Esri epoch-milliseconds become timestamptz. Geometry is ST_SetSRID(ST_GeomFromGeoJSON(…), 4326), wrapped in ST_Multi when the table's stored type is Multi*. Esri shape-area / shape-length system fields are dropped.

The same MapServer query is used whenever the table is refreshed.

Provenance: oh_nrcs_huc_12

This file describes how the rows in PostgreSQL table oh_nrcs_huc_12 were obtained from an external source: where they were fetched and how fields were renamed and typed.
