State Planner

About State Planner

State Planner answers questions about a state's public data in plain language and draws the answer on a map. Ask which state highways have the worst crash rates, which posted bridges sit on truck routes, or where the jobs are, and the answer comes back as a written explanation with map layers you can switch on and off.

Where the data comes from

Every answer is computed from data that government agencies publish, loaded into State Planner's own database. 50 states and the District of Columbia are live today, and more states are added as their data is loaded.

Each state's page lists its data sets by source, and each data set has a page of its own saying what it holds, who publishes it, and what its fields mean.

How an answer is produced

An AI model reads the descriptions of the state's data sets, writes database queries against State Planner's copy of the data, and turns what they return into the written answer and the map. Every query it runs is kept with the chat, and a chat's transcript lists each one, so a figure in an answer can be traced to the query that produced it. AI answers can contain mistakes; the queries are there so that they can be checked.
