State Planner

National data sets

The public data sets State Planner can query for every state: 2 data sources · 4 data sets. Each one's page says what it holds, who publishes it, and what its fields mean.

Census

US Census Bureau. This product uses the Census Bureau Data API but is not endorsed or certified by the Census Bureau. www.census.gov

  • Annual Population Estimates by State, Age, Sex and Race

The Census Bureau's official estimate of how many people of each age, sex, race and Hispanic origin lived in every state, the District of Columbia and the United States as a whole on July 1 of every year since 1970. Use it to set a state's age profile or racial and ethnic make-up beside its neighbours' or the nation's, to rank the states by their share of older residents or children, or to see how quickly each has aged over half a century. The earlier decades distinguish fewer races, and the 1970s and 1980s do not record Hispanic origin.

  • Annual Population Estimates by State

The Census Bureau's official population estimate for every state, the District of Columbia and the United States as a whole on July 1 of every year since 1970, with what drove each year's change since 2000: births, deaths, people moving in from abroad and people moving between states. Use it to set a state's growth beside its neighbours' or the nation's over half a century, to rank the states, or to see whether a state is gaining people from the rest of the country or losing them to it.

  • Census States

The Census Bureau's boundary of every state and the District of Columbia, with each one's land and water area and the Census region and division it belongs to. Use it to draw any state-by-state figure as a map of the whole country, such as a state's growth beside its neighbours', or to outline a state on a map of its own data.

NAICS (BLS industry codes)

U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages industry titles. www.bls.gov

  • NAICS Industry Codes

The names of the industry codes the employment data is reported by, from all industries together down to some 1,400 detailed industries: the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) that BLS and the Census Bureau use, with BLS's broader goods-producing and service-providing domains and supersectors above it. Use it to put readable names on job and wage figures, and to move between a detailed industry and the broader group it belongs to.
