National Tunnel Inventory
Every tunnel on a public road in the country, as each state, federal agency and tribal government reports it to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) every year: where it is, the route it carries, how long and wide it is, its lanes, traffic and vertical clearance, who owns and maintains it, when it was built and last inspected, its load rating and posting, and whether it restricts tall vehicles or hazardous materials. Good for finding the tunnels on a corridor or truck route, the height and hazardous material limits a freight route meets, and how inspections and ratings changed over the years.

The following datasets represent tunnel data submitted annually to FHWA by the States, Federal agencies, and Tribal governments in accordance with the National Tunnel Inspection Standards and the Specifications for the National Tunnel Inventory. Each dataset is submitted in the spring, and may be corrected or updated throughout the year. The data for public highway tunnels is considered final and is published on this website by June 15th of each calendar year.
