State Planner

BEA Regional Price Parities by State

How expensive each state is compared with the national average, every year since 2008, for everything people buy and separately for goods, rents, utilities and other services, with each state's income and consumer spending adjusted for both its own price level and inflation. Use it to compare what a paycheck buys from state to state, to see where housing drives the cost of living, or to rank states by real income per person.

The term "all items" refers to all the detailed consumption goods and services used in the estimation of the RPPs.

Real personal income for states is personal income divided by the RPPs and the national PCE price index. The result is a constant dollar (using 2017 as the base year) estimate of real personal income. Calculations are performed on unrounded data.
